Chapter 11
Sam set his alarm for six oâclock so he would be up early to make breakfast for Sara. He was up long before six, and when his alarm went off, he ran from his bathroom to turn the annoying sound off. Then he returned to his bathroom to continue with his morning rituals. With his Remington shaver in hand, he walked out of his bathroom and opened his closet and picked out a pair of khaki slacks and a white tennis shirt. He put on a pair of white socks and slipped his feet into a comfortable pair of white tennis shoes. He opened his bedroom door and quietly closed it behind him. Sam glanced down the hall at the guest room and saw the door was still closed, so he assumed Sara was still asleep. He walked to the kitchen and was surprised to see Sara preparing breakfast.
âGood morning, Sam. Did you sleep well?â Sara asked, looking over her shoulder.
âOh yes, fine. How about you? Were the accommodations satisfactory?â Sam asked, fighting a yawn.
âAw, youâre still a little sleepy. I guess you didnât get a good nightâs sleep. I didnât get much sleep either. I couldnât wait for today,â Sara replied.
âMe too,â Sam answered, smiling at her. âWhat are you making?â
âIâm making French toast. I hope you like French toast.â
âI love French toast. I must admit, I havenât had French toast in ages,â Sam replied.
âI hope you like the way I make it.â
âI know I will,â he answered.
Sam stood behind her, watching her bathe the bread in the egg and carefully place the egg-soaked bread on the griddle. Sara was still speaking, but Sam was oblivious to anything she was saying. His glance went from the French toast frying on the griddle to the back of her head. He was mesmerized by her long brown hair as it draped down her back. His gaze drifted to her slender waist and down to her nicely formed buttocks as she stood barefoot on the tile floor. She looked so fragile standing there, and he wanted so much to put his arms around her and protect her from the mental and physical abuse she had endured over the years she was married. Sara asked a question, but Sam did not answer.
âSam? Is there anything wrong?â she asked, turning toward him with the spatula in her hand.
âIâm sorry. I guess I just spaced out for a minute. Just seeing you again, Iâm just overwhelmed.â
âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to complicate your life,â she said apologetically.
âComplicate my life? If this is complicating my life, then this is the kind of complication I like. I can think of worse things than spending it with you. Let me see, worse things. Like flying to Hawaii by myself and sun bathing on Waikiki Beach by myself and watching babes walking around with hardly anything on.â
Sara started to laugh as she turned back to her cooking and remarked, âI like complicating your life, Sam.â
He thought for
